First Time in Rome? Here’s How to Experience the Eternal City Right
So, Rome is finally on your radar!
But with so much to see, planning your time here can get overwhelming fast. What’s actually worth it? What should you book in advance? And how do you avoid wasting time in long lines or tourist traps?
As luxury travel advisors, we help travelers answer those questions every day. If you’re considering Rome, here are a few quick recommendations that first-time travelers often find helpful — and just a taste of how we can help you build a custom trip around the best of the city.
WHAT TO DO IN ROME
Visit The Colosseum
This is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world — and for good reason. The Colosseum is ancient, massive, and awe-inspiring. But here’s what many travellers don’t realize: a visit here is so much better with a guide. You’ll skip the long lines, get the real history, and often access parts that general admission doesn’t include.
Right next door is the Roman Forum — once the heart of public life in ancient Rome. It’s easy to miss or rush through, but with the right guidance, it’s one of the most fascinating parts of the city.
Walk Around the City Center
Wandering from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi Fountain, through the Jewish Quarter and Piazza Navona, gives you a feel for the city’s charm and energy.
Whether you’re grabbing a cappuccino, window shopping, or simply people-watching in a piazza, allow time to explore without an agenda.
Trastevere
After a day of touring, it’s time to “do what the Romans do” and for us, that means to eat! You can’t leave Rome without tasting traditional Roman cuisine and no, we are not talking about fetticini alfredo. It is time to savor mouthwatering pasta carbonara, creamy cacio e pepe, and delicious gelato that will make your taste buds dance. If you are a true foodie, you should venture into Trastevere, a neighborhood famous for its narrow alleyways, lively piazzas, and many restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Trastevere particularly comes alive in the evenings when the streets are filled with locals and music. However, if you are just a glutton for tours, a foodie tour in Rome is a must. We got to experience a sampler of sorts on our most recent trip where we tasted too much food to list. But our favorite dish was the fried artichokes in the Jewish Quarter before concluding with homemade gelato in Trastevere. Delish!
Vatican City
You also should not forget about Vatican City, a tiny independent city-state within Rome. Here, you can browse St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. While impressive, it is also massive and often crowded. Booking a small group/private tour here can make all the difference. Not only will you skip the long queues, but you’ll also get context for the art and history you’re seeing — especially when standing under Michelangelo’s famous ceiling.

The Suiteheart Society Approach
Rome isn’t just a destination; it can also be the first stop on a tour of Europe. The city’s international airport and central location make it an easy starting point for broader Italian or European travel.
From Rome’s port in Civitavecchia, you can set sail to spots like Barcelona, Athens, or the French Riviera. Prefer to stay on land? Trains from Rome make it easy to reach Venice, Florence, Naples, and beyond.
At The Suiteheart Society, we often help clients build full itineraries that begin in Rome — pairing iconic sights with more relaxed, luxurious stops throughout Italy or the Mediterranean.
If you’re thinking about Rome — whether as a standalone trip or part of a bigger adventure — we’d love to help you make it unforgettable. Reach out for personalised recommendations or to start planning your custom itinerary.
