Questions & Answers

What are the differences between river cruises and ocean cruises?

It’s obvious to say a river cruise is on a river and an ocean cruise is in the ocean. However, there are some key differences. Since rivers are narrow waterways, river cruise ships are smaller vessels that hold an average capacity of 100-300 passengers. The experience is an intimate and immersive journey that allows you to sail past picturesque landscapes & villages, and explore historical cities during cultural excursions.

Ocean cruises are larger ships that typically have 2-3,000 passengers. Some can even accommodate up to 5,000 passengers! These cruises stop at larger, coastal cities and sail over the open sea. They provide more onboard activities, longer itineraries, and varied cabin types.

Both offer unique adventures and can be a great option for groups!

What is the dress code for a river cruise?

In the daytime, casual clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended, especially for excursions. In the evening, casual elegance is preferred. This may include slacks and collared shirts for men; and a dress or slacks and a blouse for women. There are typically no formal nights.

.

Are river cruises suitable for families or better for adults?

Most river cruises are focused on providing adults with a relaxing and mature atmosphere. They typically emphasize fine dining and cultural experiences making them more attractive to couples, solo travelers, and adult groups. Some river cruise lines offer multi-generational sailings or specialized itineraries that are family-friendly, however, even on these itineraries, age minimums can apply. Families with young children may find ocean cruises are better suited for their needs as they provide children’s programs and several entertainment options.

Do river cruises offer accommodations and services for passengers with disabilities or mobility challenges?

River cruise companies often offer services and accommodations for those with disabilities. It’s advisable to check with the specific cruise line for detailed information and to reveal any specific needs during the booking process.

Are river cruises all-inclusive?

The level of inclusivity on a river cruise varies by cruise line. However, your fare can often include your accommodations, meals, guided excursions, and beverages (alcoholic & non-alcoholic).
